In the latter half of the 20th Century, Jewish-owned shops, car dealerships, synagogues, furniture stores, and institutions flourished in downtown South Bend.
South Bend’s very own Debby Barton Grant describes the Jewish neighborhood near downtown in this short video.
Hear from other sons and daughters of South Bend on businesses and institutions they had a personal connection to, including David Piser z"l, Gerry Lerman, Nana Fromm, Anne Feferman, Ina Rosenberg, Barb Asher, Ron Cohen, Peter Firestein, Cheri Schuster and Jody Freid. This is just a sampling of the history and in no way captures all of the community assets and family businesses. Click the button below to get started!
Thanks to Indiana Humanities for awarding us a grant for this project and to all the volunteers who helped put this together (especially past and present community members who agreed to tell us their stories!)
