The Digital Archive Project

May 31, 2019

What do you do with thousands of photographs and hundreds of treasured documents?  If you’re the Michiana Jewish Historical Society, you roll up your sleeves, get to work, and create an online catalogue to share them!

The mission of the Michiana Jewish Historical Society is to be a ‘living museum’ that provides “a comprehensive record of the ways Jews organized over time…and displays the vitality of those individuals.” Since our inception in 1993, we have been the happy recipient of photos, scrapbooks, artifacts, a Torah scroll, and other Judaica that would have been lost when family members moved or passed away. But what good is all this wonderful bounty if it sits tucked away in our office?

Over the past few years, more than 200 people have attended our Hands on History, Pickle Me, “Monkey Business,” Schmoozapaloozas, and a workshop about archiving family photos.  Additionally, we continue growing our Family Tree, sending newsletters, and maintaining our online presence. These have all come to you free of charge through traditional memberships.

Thanks to two grants from the Indiana Historical Society*, we are breathing life into the aspirations in our mission and creating a digital archive in a three-stage process and we need your help!

PHASE 1 - Scanning more than 3,000 photographs and 1,000 documents and uploading them into museum-quality software.  They’re searchable by topic or name and easily accessible wherever you are!

PHASE 2 - Editing and posting oral histories, videos, and other already-digitized materials, then scanning and digitizing other paper materials such as memoirs and newsletters.

PHASE 3 – Researching, writing, and digitizing stories and information about the evolution of the Michiana Jewish community, including early settlers, businesses, and institutions.

Phase 1 is well underway – we have completed the first grant and are working hard on the second. Our goal is to raise $11,000 to complete Phase I and to cover operating expenses for 2019. This includes funds to match our second grant. We are not asking
for a traditional membership, but are instead asking you to support the archive this year.

Please consider one of the Sponsorship Opportunities listed here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope the mission of the Michiana Jewish Historical Society is important to you. As it is written at Yad Vashem: “Forgetfulness leads to exile while remembrance is the secret of redemption.”

Can we count on your support?
